cellular respiration

What is the term used for the set of metabolic reactions that convert chemical bond to energy in the form of ATP ?

  • Photosynthesis
  • reproduction
  • active transport
  • cellular respiration

All respiration start with glycolysis in the cytoplasm

  1. in the present of oxygen the process will continue to the mitochondria
  2. A series of oxidation,/ reduction reactions the primary glucose broken down
  3. so that the energy contained within the bond can be transferred to the smaller ATP molecules.
when glucose broken down its electrons and hydrogen atoms are involved in oxidative phosphorylation in order to make ATP while carbon and oxygen atom are released as carbon dioxide.

Anaerobic respiration does not occur frequently in humans
but during rigorious exercise lack of available oxygen in muscle can lead to anerobic ATP production in a process called latic acid fermentation.

Alcohol fermentation which occour in yeast is another type of anaerobic respiration.
anaerobic respiration is much less efficient than aerobic respiration     as it has net yeld of two ATP while aerobic respiration net yeild exceeds 30 ATP
