Fellow citizens -pardon me and allow me to ask why am i called upon to speak here today? what have i or those i represent to do with your national independence? are the great principles of political freedom and of natural justice embodied in that declaration of independence, extended to us? And am I therefore called upon to bring our humble offering to the national altar, and to confess the benefits, and express devout gratitude for the blessings, resulting from your independence to us ?

First passage the tone is exasperated.

while contemplative might seem like and option because of the thoughtful nature of the text

choice Ais correct because the speaker is frustrated by the thought of being included when he felt that the fellow member of his race were being excluded.

The speaker is not non chalant nor accepting

would to god , both for your sakes and ours that affirmative answer could be truthfully returned to these questions! then would my fast task be light, and my burden easy and delightful. for who is ther so cold that a nation sympathy could not warm him ? who so obdurate and dead to claims of gratitude that would not thankfully acknowledge such priceless benefits? who so stolid and selfish

contemplative:

  • Someone who is contemplative spends a lot of time thinking deeply, reflecting, or being thoughtful, often in a quiet and calm way.

  • It can also describe a mood or atmosphere that feels peaceful and thoughtful.

"Exasperated" means feeling very frustrated, annoyed, or irritated—often because something keeps happening over and over and it wears down your patience.

Dorothy lived in the great Kansas prairie, with Uncle Henry, who

was a farmer, and Aunt Em, who was the farmer's wife. Once, their

house had been painted, but the sun blistered the paint and the

rains washed it away, and now the house was as dull and gray as

everything else.

When Aunt Em came to live there she was a young, pretty wife. The

sun and wind had changed her, too. They had taken the sparkle

from her eyes and left them a sober gray; they had taken the red

from her cheeks and lips, and they were gray also. She was thin and

gaunt, and never smiled now. When Dorothy first came to live with

her, Aunt Em had been so startled by the child's laughter that she

would scream and press her hand upon her heart whenever the

little girl's merry voice reached her ears; and she still looked at the

little girl with wonder that she could find anything to laugh at.
