Maths

The owner of a hot dog stand records the number of hot dogs purchased by each customer on a particular day and obtains the following data:

Number of Hot Dogs Purchased

Number of Customers

1

50

27

15

Which of the following is the total number of hot dogs purchased during the day?
This is the sum of the left column of the table, not the total number of hot dogs purchased.
MY ANSWER
This is the total number of customers, not the total number of hot dogs purchased.
This number results from adding across the rows and then adding those totals. This is not the correct method to determine the total number of hot dogs purchased.
To obtain the total number of hot dogs purchased, the numbers in the rows of the table should be multiplied and then the resulting products should be added.

1 × 50 = 50
2 × 27 = 54
3 × 15 = 45
4 × 6 = 24
5 × 2 = 10

50 + 54 + 45 + 24 + 10 = 183
