A person puts their hand on a hot stove but quickly removes it. In three to five sentences, describe the pathway of the signal and response through the nervous system.
When a person touches a hot stove, sensory receptors in the skin detect the heat and send a signal through sensory neurons to the spinal cord. In the spinal cord, the signal is processed by an interneuron, which quickly sends a message back through motor neurons. These motor neurons activate the muscles in the arm and hand, causing them to pull away from the stove. This quick reaction is called a reflex and happens without needing the brain at first. The brain later processes the pain after the reflex action has occurred.
